I’m just about as surprised as anyone that this new and lavishly illustrated book came together so well. The ‘Great Omar’ jewel encrusted edition is still down on the Titanic, but herein we have a sumptuous, adorned, flourished, emblazoned, embellished, beautified, and wholly resplendent rendering.

This is my second illustrated rendition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, as transmogrified by Edward FitzGerald, and is a separate book from my first one, not an update. Nor should it be confused with my new and upcoming Bodleian Manuscript Rubaiyat Re-transmogrification book, which is now about half done.

An artistic muse sent me into the zone—everything lined up, and I used all that I had, could have, or bought.

All 114 quatrain themes are presented from Edward FitzGerald’s editions and his notes (three). The quatrain numbering order is mostly that of the second edition, since this was the longest edition.

Following the quatrain number is the edition the quatrain was taken from (in parentheses). If in blue, then the quatrain appeared only in that edition; if in red, the quatrain’s wordage is exactly the same in all the editions in which it appears.

Print editions:

As with all printed books, most of the cost goes toward printing.

8.5×11 ‘portrait’ editions:

In general, each portrait edition page has a colorful art scape image, with a reflection that fades into the quatrain, which words have some faint transparencies behind and/or to the side (decorations). Sometimes, a page here and there may only have a stand-alone image.

There are paper type and hard/soft cover options. One also could print it as separate sheets in order to have vertical posters.

11×8.5 ‘landscape’ editions:

In these, the landscape-oriented images, which on the pages there mostly are, are larger, filling up a whole page, for the ultimate glory and detail. There are paper type and hard/soft cover options. I would go for hardcover and premium photo paper pages, if I could afford it, although some may not like shiny pages.

For the above, the words are on the left-hand page, with decorations about them, and the corresponding image is on the right-hand page. These pages will be shown in a subsequent post.

Um, this edition, necessarily being twice as long as the others, is expensive. It can also be printed as separate sheets to have both word page posters and image posters (no words are on the images).

The above edition pages don’t always have the full text, but at least have the key phrases, and can also be printed as separate sheets in order to have horizontal posters (they have words on the images). These pages will be shown in a subsequent post.
